Ryan Reynolds pitched idea for an 18+ ‘Star Wars’ project, but Disney wasn't game

Los Angeles, May 25 (UNI) Hollywood actor Ryan Reynolds, the force behind MCU’s billion-dollar R rated (18+) blockbuster ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’, has revealed he pitched an idea to the company for an R rated ‘Star Wars’ project to Disney—but the company wasn’t game.
Speaking on The Box Office podcast, Reynolds said the concept wasn’t built around shock value or graphic content, but aimed to tap into a more emotionally complex side of the ‘Star Wars’ universe.
“I pitched to Disney, I said, ‘Why don’t we do an R-rated Star Wars property?’” he recalled. “It doesn’t have to focus on major, A-list characters—there’s a wide range to explore. And I don’t mean R-rated to be crude. I mean R-rated as a Trojan horse for emotion.”
Despite his passion for the idea, Reynolds made clear he wasn’t pitching himself as the lead. “I’m not saying I’d want to be in it. That would be a bad fit,” he said, as per The Hollywood Reporter.
“I’d rather produce, write, or contribute behind the scenes. Properties like that thrive on scarcity and surprise. While Disney+ has changed that scarcity for ‘Star Wars’, there’s still room to surprise people.”
While the majority ‘Star Wars’ films have largely stayed in PG-13 territory, recent projects like ‘Andor’, and even the older prequel films like ‘Revenge of the Sith’ showcased a far darker, and more serious side to the galaxy far far away.
Met with near universal acclaim, the unexpected success of ‘Andor’ could perhaps potentially compel Disney to shift the tone, and explore more mature themes in ‘Star Wars’ in the near future. Still, a fully R-rated entry remains outside the franchise’s current boundaries.
Reynolds, who co-wrote, produced, and starred in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’—now the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time—clearly sees untapped potential in applying similar creative freedom to other beloved franchises. “I always wonder why studios don’t just gamble on something like that,” he said.
Beyond ‘Star Wars’, Reynolds is also reportedly exploring another ‘Deadpool’ film involving a handful of X-Men characters, and is currently writing ‘Boy Band’, a comedy about a reunited pop group, for Paramount.
Whether or not an 18+ ‘Star Wars’ will ever become real is unknown, Reynolds’ pitch has made it clear that there is a whole level of unexplored territory with many possibilities in even the most iconic franchises—but only if studios are bold enough to go there.
