Sajad Lone seeks home detention for Shabir Shah amid health issues

Srinagar, June 20 (UNI) Peoples Conference Chairman and MLA Sajad Lone on Friday appealed J&K Lt Governor to facilitate a home custody of separatist leader Shabir Shah until his medical issues are sorted out.

Lone said that Shah is suffering from life threatening ailments which need medical intervention and in all probability surgery.

“Shabir Shah sahib is very very ill. He is suffering from life threatening ailments which need medical intervention and in all probability surgery. The best way would be to involve his family. He would want to be near his loved ones when he is wheeled in for surgery. He is more than 75 years of age,” Lone said in a post on X.

“I have know Shabir Shah Sahib for decades. I may not agree with his political ideology, but he has always believed in non violence. He will always be dear to me,” MLA Lone said.

“It is my humble handfolded request to @OfficeOfLGJandK to ideally facilitate a home custody until his medical issues are sorted out. The least we can do is to have his family around him,” he added.

Hurriyat chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Friday fervently appealed to the Government of India and the concerned authorities to intervene immediately to ensure that due medical care is extended to Shah, and his family is allowed access to be with him when he needs them the most.

“I also appeal to the elected government of J&K to raise this serious issue and provide every assistance that they can in this matter,” Mirwaiz said.

On Thursday Former Chief Minister and Peoples Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti urged the Union government to intervene on humanitarian grounds in the case of ailing separatist leader Shah.

Shabir Shah, the founder of the Democratic Freedom Party, has been in jail since 2017. He was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act in July 2017. In 2019, the National Investigation Agency took his custody in an alleged terror funding case. He is presently lodged in Tihar Jail. The government also banned the Democratic Freedom Party as an unlawful association under the UAPA.
