Sammu village of Hamirpur -- where Diwali is not celebrated due to a 'curse'

Punkaj Bhaaratiya
Hamirpur(HP), Nov 8 (UNI) The residents of Sammu village in Hamirpur district of Himachal Pradesh believe the village was cursed by a woman who had committed 'Sati' and told them not to celebrate Diwali for seven generations. When some villagers attempted to celebrate the festival, a sudden fire broke out, resulting in untimely deaths and numerous hardships, they say. And that is the reason that the village goes without Diwali celebrations every year.
This year too, villagers did other household chores rather than celebrating Diwali.
The villagers worship the statue of the woman who had committed Sati, and a statue of her can be found in every home.
Whenever the villagers celebrate Diwali, something untoward happens, goes the belief.
According to them, years ago, a woman from this village cursed the village, directing that no villager should celebrate Diwali for seven generations. Consequently, Diwali is not celebrated in this village to this day.
The villagers continue to follow this tradition even today.
After Diwali, the statue of the woman who committed sati and her family is worshipped with respect in the village.
Kesoni Kumar of Sammu village explained that during the Satya Yuga, kings had armies. The husband of a woman from Sammu village was also a soldier in the army. On Diwali, the woman was returning to her parents' home with her son when suddenly some soldiers carrying goods arrived. The soldiers then asked the woman for the whereabouts of a soldier martyred in the army. The woman replied, "This is my husband. Please leave his belongings here."
She then committed Sati along with her husband's belongings and son.
Before committing Sati, she cursed the residents of Sammu village, saying that no villager would celebrate Diwali for the next seven generations. Since then, no villager in Sammu village celebrates Diwali.
Urmila of Sammu village explained that although some villagers began celebrating Diwali, their cowsheds suddenly caught fire. The blaze was so intense that everything was reduced to ashes in an instant.
Furthermore, if any villager attempted to celebrate Diwali, they would suffer from some disease. Due to this fear, no villager celebrates Diwali, she added.
Another villager, Jagdish Chand Rangra said that all the villagers have a statue of the woman who was burnt alive, which is worshipped after Diwali.
"If a guest suddenly arrives at the house during the puja, the puja is considered ineffective. The puja is performed again. This tradition is still followed by all the villagers," he said.
The village's modern-day youth are also following the traditions of the elders. However, they regret not celebrating Diwali.
Divyaash Kumar said that there is no superstition in this. This is a true incident told to them by their elders. That tradition is being followed.
According to him, "Diwali has not been celebrated in this village for centuries."
