Samrat briefs Nitish on Centre’s initiative for silt management in Bihar rivers

Patna, Nov 4 (UNI) Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary Wednesday met former Chief Minister Nitish Kumar at his residence and briefed him on the Centre’s initiative to undertake silt management in the state’s rivers, following a long-standing demand raised by Kumar.
Choudhary informed Kumar that a memorandum of understanding (MoU) had been signed with the Centre for the removal of around four lakh cubic metres of silt from various rivers in Bihar. The initiative is expected to help mitigate floods and prevent soil erosion in agricultural areas.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Choudhary said Kumar had been consistently advocating river silt removal for several years. “Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, the Centre has taken a historic initiative in this direction,” he said.
The Chief Minister said the silt removal work would be undertaken by the ministry concerned, and the extracted material would also be put to use. He described the initiative as an important step towards improving water management and safeguarding farmers’ interests in Bihar.
Choudhary said he had congratulated Kumar on the initiative and assured him that the state government was committed to fulfilling his vision for Bihar’s development and good governance.
He added that the state government was working to transform Bihar into a developed state under the guidance of Prime Minister Modi and with the cooperation of Kumar.
Referring to Kumar’s tenure as Chief Minister, Choudhary said he had played an important role in establishing good governance and making the state free from organised crime. The present government was committed to carrying forward that legacy, he added.
The Chief Minister also said he had held discussions with several union ministers on issues related to Bihar’s development.
He said he had urged the union Railway Minister to operate more special trains this year than last year to facilitate the movement of passengers visiting Bihar during Diwali and Chhath. More than 10,000 pairs of special trains had been operated last year, he said.
Choudhary also said he had requested the Centre to provide direct rail connectivity between Ayodhya and Sitamarhi.
On industrial development, the Chief Minister said an industrial corridor was being developed in Gaya under the BHAVYA scheme. He had urged the Centre to develop similar corridors at five other locations in Bihar.
Proposals for Muzaffarpur and Darbhanga had already been submitted to the Centre, he said.
The state government had initiated the process of making around 13,000 acres of land available for industries, with more than 1,000 industries having been allotted land so far, Choudhary added. He also said a data centre named ‘Control S’ had been inaugurated in Patna.
The Chief Minister said the state had sought the Centre’s support for expediting environmental clearances for industrial corridors and developing modern eco-tourism facilities in Bihar under the public-private partnership (PPP) model.
Choudhary said the state government was accelerating work in industrial development, infrastructure, flood control, tourism and public welfare.
He expressed confidence that Bihar’s goal of becoming a developed state would be achieved with the guidance of Prime Minister Modi and the cooperation of former Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.
