Sant Literature Must Be Promoted Through Kirtans in Its True Spirit: Ulhasdada Pawar

Pune, Oct 29 (UNI) Senior litterateur and scholar of saint literature Dr Ulhasdada Pawar on Thursday stressed the need to promote the teachings of saints in their true spirit through kirtans, saying the Warkari tradition upholds the values of equality, brotherhood and discipline.
He was speaking as the president of the 17th Nandi Sammelan, titled 'Sahitya Nishthanchi Mandiyali', organised at Alandi near Pune in the run-up to the 100th All India Marathi Literary Conference.
The event was jointly organised by the World Peace Centre, Alandi, MAEER's MIT, Pune, the Maharashtra Sahitya Parishad and the Maharashtra government's Marathi Language Department. Veteran singer Usha Mangeshkar inaugurated the conference, while former literary conference president Dr Shripal Sabnis attended as the chief guest.
Pawar said language was the true carrier of culture and stressed the need to preserve Marathi to protect the state's rich folk traditions. He called for constructive discussions and deliberations on the literature of saints instead of social disputes. Sabnis said the abandonment of saintly values had contributed to the moral decline of society and called for a Maharashtra free from hypocrisy and superstition, guided by the teachings of saints.
Mangeshkar recalled how Hridaynath Mangeshkar had composed mus ic for verses from Sant Dnyaneshwar's 'Bhavarthadeepika', which were popularised among households through the voice of Lata Mangeshkar. She also appreciated the contribution of Prof Dr Vishwanath Karad towards society. Prof Swati Karad-Chate emphasised the responsibility of educational institutions to preserve Marathi and familiarise younger generations with saint literature. She said good literature played an important role in enriching society.
On the occasion, Prof Dr Vishwanath Karad, founder-president of MAEER's MIT World Peace University, was felicitated, and a special commemorative publication was released.
Maharashtra Sahitya Parishad office-bearers Pradeep Niphadkar and Sunil Mahajan invited literature enthusiasts from Alandi to attend the 100th All India Marathi Literary Conference to be held in Pune. UNI SP CDS
