Sapkal slams Maha Govt over drought relief, seeks Rs 1 lakh per hectare aid

Mumbai, Oct 15 (UNI) Maharashtra Congress president Harshwardhan Sapkal on Thursday criticised the BJP-led Mahayuti government for its alleged failure to address the distress of drought-hit farmers, questioning how they could celebrate Diwali with an advance relief of just Rs 5,000.
Sapkal visited drought-affected areas in Washim district, including Kinwad, Malegaon, Pandav Umra, Tandali and Kamathwada, to assess the situation and interact with farmers.
Speaking to the media, he said the prolonged dry spell lasting over 75 days and the rising temperatures had severely affected the kharif crop, leaving farmers facing mounting losses and debt.
Soybean crops had withered, and many pods had failed to develop grains, leaving farmers with little hope of a reasonable yield, he said.
Sapkal alleged that the government's announcement of Rs 5,000 in advance assistance was inadequate and amounted to making light of farmers' suffering at a time when they were struggling to manage their household expenses during the festive season.
He demanded compensation of Rs 1 lakh per hectare for affected farmers, a complete loan waiver, immediate establishment of fodder camps for livestock, financial assistance for agricultural labourers, a waiver of students' educational fees and proper planning for drinking water supplies.
Calling for an end to repeated surveys, meetings and announcements, Sapkal urged the government to transfer financial assistance directly into farmers' bank accounts.
He said the Congress would continue its struggle until drought-affected farmers received adequate relief and justice.
