SC stays defamation trial against Rahul Gandhi over remarks against PM Modi

New Delhi, Oct 13 (UNI) The Supreme Court has stayed trial proceedings in a criminal defamation case against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his alleged remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling him “Choro Ke Sardar” and “Commander-in-Thief”.
A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Aparesh Kumar Singh issued notice, returnable in four weeks, on Gandhi’s plea challenging the Bombay High Court’s September 8 order declining to quash the case.
“Issue notice returnable in four weeks. In the meantime, further proceedings before the trial court shall remain stayed,” the bench ordered.
Senior Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi appeared for Gandhi.
Gandhi had challenged the Magistrate’s summons before the Bombay High Court, arguing that he had neither named the BJP nor targeted any identifiable group, making the complaint filed by party worker Mahesh Shrishrimal legally untenable.
The High Court rejected the argument, holding that the BJP, as a registered national political party, was an identifiable body.
