SCR, IIM Bangalore join hands to boost rail freight business

Hyderabad, Oct 8 (UNI) South Central Railway (SCR) has partnered with the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Bangalore, to study the freight market and identify strategies to increase rail freight business and improve rail’s share in commodity transportation.
As part of the study, IIM Bangalore organised a “Rail Business Conclave” with freight customers and industry partners on Thursday. SCR General Manager Sanjay Kumar Srivastava was the chief guest.
IIM Bangalore has been conducting an extensive study since February 2026 covering major freight sectors including cement, coal, steel, agriculture, automobiles, ports and containers across the six divisions of the erstwhile SCR zone.
The study also examined emerging opportunities such as new ports along the Andhra coast, the Jalna dry port, multimodal logistics parks, new steel plants, the EV cluster at Bidkin and potential new freight terminals and Gati Shakti Cargo Terminals.
Panel discussions were held with representatives from cement industries, Singareni Collieries, thermal power stations, ports, chambers of commerce, warehousing and cargo and container services to discuss operational issues, logistics requirements and strategies to increase rail freight.
Addressing the gathering, Srivastava said Indian Railways had set a target of loading 3,000 million tonnes by 2030, with SCR and South Coast Railway together targeting 264 million tonnes.
He said the target was challenging but achievable with the support of stakeholders, industry partners and railway employees.
He assured the participants that SCR would examine issues relating to operational constraints, reliability, transit time, expansion and logistics requirements.
He also urged IIM Bangalore to convert industry feedback into actionable recommendations to improve freight services.
Senior railway officials, IIM Bangalore representatives and delegates from various freight and logistics sectors attended the conclave.
