Search team uncovers four bodies in Nepal's Chilime Hydropower tunnel in Rasuwa district

Kathmandu, Sep 16 (UNI) A joint search and rescue team, including foreign personnel, recovered four bodies on Wednesday from inside a tunnel at the Chilime Hydropower Project in Nepal's Rasuwa district, where people had been trapped since the Bhotekoshi flood on August 26.
The team had been using an excavator and loader airlifted by helicopter to Syafrubesi to clear debris and create an approximately 1,050-metre access route to the tunnel by breaking through rocks.
During the debris removal, rescuers found water flowing from inside the tunnel about 70 metres from the entrance. They entered through the opening and searched to around 130 metres, but rising water had reached the upper section of the tunnel, preventing the excavator from operating.
On Wednesday, a team including divers entered through the opening and searched towards the far end of the tunnel, where they found four bodies.
One body has been recovered and brought outside, while efforts are continuing to retrieve the remaining three. The search operation remains ongoing.
More than 1,399 bodies or remains have been recovered so far, according to the latest figures from Nepal Police Headquarters in Naxal. Of those, 544 are male, 336 are female and 519 are partial remains.
Central Police Spokesperson and Deputy Superintendent of Police Abinarayan Kafle said 4,089 people remain on the official missing persons list. The list includes 2,907 males, 572 females, 272 foreign males and 328 foreign females.
The number of people injured in the floods and safely rescued stands at 9,287. Police said 1,230 bodies have so far been managed following DNA profiling and safely inhumed for future identification.
A total of 7,975 police personnel have been deployed across the affected areas for search and rescue operations, humanitarian assistance and management of the dead.
Emergency shelters established in several districts are currently housing 3,440 survivors, police said.
