Sensex dips by 138.64 points

Mumbai, June 18 (UNI) Counting its downward streak for the second straight session, the BSE Sensex on Wednesday declines 138.64 points to close at 81,444.66, tracking negative cues from global peers amid rising geopolitical tensions between Israel and Iran.



The National Stock Exchange (NSE), too, fell by 41.35 points to settle at 24,812.05.

The Sensex opened lower at 81,314.62 against its previous close of 81,583.30 and fell to an intraday low of 81,237.01; it recorded the day's high at 81,858.97.

The NSE registered a day's high at 24,947.55 and a day's low at 24,750.45

Mid-cap fell by 0.34 pc and the small-cap by 0.34 pc.

The market breadth was weak on the BSE as 1,532 share rose and 2,444 shares fell. A total of 139 shares were unchanged.

Among sectoral indices barring consumer durables, auto and bankex which were up by 0.75 pc, 0.37 pc and 0,03 pc, all other sectoral indices ended the session in red with IT being the top sectoral loser.

Other losers were commodities by 0.66 pc, energy by 0.41 pc, FMCG by 0.47 pc, financial 0.17 pc, healthcare 0.52 pc, industrial 0.40 pc, telecom 0.01 pc, utilities 0.75 pc, capital goods 0.48 pc, metal 0.65 pc, Oil & gas by 0.47 pc, power 0.67 pc, realty 0.46 pc and Teck by 0.53 pc.

In 30 scrips, 10 advanced while 20 declined.

Top five losers were TCS by 1.58 pc to Rs 3,459.65, Adani ports by 1.55 pc to Rs 1,370.10, HUL by 1.34 pc to Rs 2,297.60, Nestle India by 1,25 pc to Rs 2,332 and Bajaj finsv by 1.19 pc to Rs 1.979.85.

Top five gainers were Indus Bank by 5.12 pc to Rs 860.60, Titan by 1.99 pc to Rs 3,472.95, M&M by 1.24 pc to Rs 3,045.80, Maruti by 1.12 pc to Rs 12,735.80 and Asian Paints by 0.74 pc to Rs 2,281.15.

European stocks advanced on Wednesday.

Asian shares traded mixed, as escalating tensions between Israel and Iran weigh on investor sentiment.

On the Wall Street, all three major averages ended the trading day lower. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 299.29 points, or 0.70%, to close at 42,215.80. The S&P 500 shed 0.84% to end at 5,982.72, while the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.91% and settled at 19,521.09.
