Sensex plunges nearly 900 points, investors lose Rs 4.68 lakh cr

New Delhi, Oct 19 (UNI) Indian stock markets on Monday snapped their two-day winning streak and witnessed heavy selling. The market downturn came amid elevated crude oil prices, weak global cues and selling in private banking stocks following disappointing earnings.
The total market capitalisation of all BSE-listed companies fell to Rs 4,68,80,280.67 crore as of 2:10 p.m., down from Rs 4,73,46,932.13 crore at Friday's close.
Selling pressure intensified after a muted start, dragging the Nifty below the 22,900 mark to an intraday low of 22,845. Most of the sectoral indices also traded largely in the red.
At close, the Sensex was down 876.37 points or 1.17 percent at 73,852.90, and the Nifty was down 257.20 points or 1.11 percent at 22,888.95.
Biggest Nifty losers were Axis Bank, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, Bajaj Finance, Trent, Infosys, while gainers included JSW Steel, Eicher Motors, SBI, L&T and ONGC.
Among the sectors, all sectoral indices ended in the red except PSU Bank which gained 2.2%. FMCG index was also down by 1.2%, IT index down 1.3% and Private Bank index shed 1.8 percent.
Indian rupee ended marginally higher at 94.92 per dollar extending its winning streak to a seventh consecutive session, compared with the previous close of 94.95.
Over 150 stocks touched 52-week low. These included SJVN, Reliance Power, India Cements, Jupiter Wagons, Medplus Health, TVS Holdings, KEC International, Rashtriya Chemicals, Voltas, Eris Life, Gujarat Energy, Vishal Mega Marts, Britannia Industries, Avenue Supermarts, Max Healthcare, HDB Financial, Alkem Lab, UTI AMC, Natco Pharma, Fortis Health, among others
Brent crude prices fell from a five-month high on Monday as traders weighed renewed tensions in West Asia.
The global benchmark declined 1.5 percent to USD 108.27 a barrel, while US benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) fell 0.6 percent to USD 100.83 a barrel.
India's largest private bank lenders such as HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and Axis Bank were the top index drags.

India's largest private bank lenders such as HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and Axis Bank were the top index drags with HDFC Bank shares lost nearly 3 per cent.
Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments Limited on market's performance said, "Indian equities came under renewed selling pressure, reversing the recent recovery as weak global cues and selling in private banks and IT stocks weighed on investor sentiment. Global markets remained cautious ahead of a busy week of corporate earnings. Private banks remained under pressure following quarterly earnings and concerns over margin trends, while PSU banks bucked the broader weakness, supported by expectations of relatively resilient margins and asset quality. Crude oil prices eased after the US waived key sanctions linked to Russia, raising expectations of increased Russian fuel supplies to the global market."
"However, crude prices remained elevated, with geopolitical tensions continuing to influence the outlook. The Nifty slipped below the psychologically important 23,000 level, while broader market breadth remained weak, reflecting cautious investor sentiment amid earnings-related volatility and uncertain global cues."UNI VK AAB
