The National Stock Exchange (NSE) too advanced by 200.40 points to settle at 25,241.25.
The Sensex edged higher in opening trade to 82,448.80 compared to its previous close of 82,055.11 and rose further to touch intra-day high of 82,815.91 and low of 82,339.57, before closing in green at 82,755.51.
The Nifty registered the day's high at 25,266.80 and low at 25,125.05.
The BSE Mid-Cap index rose 0.63 percent and Small-Cap index added 1.59 pc.
The market breadth was stronger on the BSE, as 2,824 shares gained and 1,205 shares fell while total 133 shares remained unchanged.
Among Sectoral indices, barring Capital Goods and Oil & Gas which were down 0.54 pc and 0.04 pc respectively, all other ended the session in green with BSE Teck being the top gainer, up by 1.69 pc.
Other Sectoral gainers were Commodities (up by 0.99 pc), Energy (by 0.27pc), FMCG (by 0.85 pc), Financial (by 0.48 pc), Health care (by 1.11 pc), Industrial (by 0.24 pc), Telecom (by 1.42 pc), Utilities (by 0.95 pc), Auto (by 1.00 pc), Bankex (by 0.11 pc), Consumer Durables (by 1.26 pc), Metals (by 0.37 pc), Power (by 0.54 pc), IT (by 1.68 pc) and Realty (by 0.58 pc).
Of the 30 scrips on BSE, 27 advanced and three declined.
Top five gainers were Titan (up by 3.61 pc to Rs 3,625.45), M&M (by 2.25 pc to Rs 3,219.30), Infosys (by 2.15 pc to Rs 1,675.50), Powergrid (by 1.78 pc to Rs 291.00) and Bharti Airtel (by 1.69 pc to Rs 1,965.51).
Losers were BEL (by 3.06 pc to Rs 405.75), Kotak Bank (by 1.14 pc to Rs 2,198.05) and Axis Bank (by 0.59 pc to Rs 1,213.65).
In global markets, Asian shares advanced as Nikkei 225 was up by 0.39 pc, Straits Times by 0.55 pc, Hangseng by 1.22 pc and Kospi by 0.15 pc.
On the Wall Street, sentiment was upbeat overnight, as all three major indices ended higher, buoyed by easing geopolitical tensions and dovish hints from the Fed.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1.19 pc, the S&P 500 added 1.11 pc and the tech-heavy Nasdaq climbed 1.43 pc.
