Shiv Sena MLA Nitin Deshmukh detained during farmers’ protest near Samruddhi Expressway

Washim, Oct 30 (UNI) Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Nitin Deshmukh and several party workers were detained on Friday while marching towards the Samruddhi Expressway in Maharashtra’s Washim district to protest against what they termed inadequate drought relief for farmers.
Deshmukh, who represents the Balapur Assembly constituency in Akola district, along with party leaders, has demanded compensation of Rs 1 lakh per hectare for drought-affected farmers, immediate settlement of pending crop insurance claims and remunerative prices for agricultural produce.
Hundreds of Sena (UBT) workers and farmers marched towards the expressway at Vanoja to stage a road blockade.
However, police detained Deshmukh and several others before they could reach the high-speed corridor, officials said.
Nearly 1,500 police personnel, including officers and constables from neighbouring districts, were deployed to maintain law and order.
Security was tightened around Vanoja and along the expressway amid apprehensions that protesters might attempt to enter the highway through adjoining agricultural fields or alternative routes to bypass the interchange.
Sena (UBT) leaders termed the financial assistance announced by the government inadequate and demanded higher compensation and expeditious settlement of crop insurance claims.
The Maharashtra government has declared drought-like conditions in 305 of the state's 358 talukas and approved an advance relief payment of Rs 5,000 each for nearly 1.5 crore affected farmers ahead of Diwali.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has said that the assistance due from the Centre would be provided once it was received, adding that the Rs 5,000 announced by the state government was immediate relief and an advance payment to farmers ahead of the festival.
