Shiv Sena seeks culpable homicide case against contractor after senior citizen’s death in Yerawada

Pune, Oct 18 ( UNI) Shiv Sena Pune city organiser Anand Goyal on Sunday demanded that a criminal case be registered against the contractor responsible for drainage work at Chitra Chowk in Yerawada following the death of a 65-year-old man who allegedly fell into an excavation pit.
In a representation submitted to the Pune Municipal Commissioner and the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone IV, Goyal alleged that inadequate safety measures at the site had endangered public safety. He demanded strict action against the contractor, including blacklisting and cancellation of the contractor’s licences.
According to the representation, drainage line work undertaken by the Pune Municipal Corporation’s sewerage department has been underway in the Chitra Chowk area for the past six months.
A pit approximately 10 to 15 feet deep was dug at the site. However, Goyal alleged that adequate safety arrangements, including sturdy iron barricades, reflective indicators, warning boards, sufficient lighting at night and traffic diversions, had not been provided.
He further claimed that local residents had repeatedly raised concerns about the safety arrangements, but their complaints had allegedly gone unaddressed.
The representation states that Pradeep Laxman Pardeshi, 65, fell into the excavation pit and sustained serious injuries, later succumbing during treatment. Goyal termed the incident a serious lapse in public safety and called for accountability on the part of those responsible.
Goyal has demanded that a criminal case be registered against the contractor under the applicable provisions of law, that the contractor be blacklisted and the necessary licences cancelled, and that the municipal corporation provide immediate financial assistance or compensation to the deceased's family.
He has also called for an immediate safety audit of all ongoing road excavation and drainage projects across Pune to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Warning of an agitation if immediate action is not taken, Goyal urged the civic administration and police to take the matter seriously and ensure accountability for the incident. UNI SP AAB
