Shivakumar heads to Delhi for Rahul Gandhi's meeting of PCC chiefs, CLP leaders

Bengaluru, Nov 6 (UNI) Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Friday left for New Delhi to attend a meeting convened by senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi with Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) presidents and Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leaders, bringing together the party's organisational and legislative leadership for discussions.
Shivakumar confirmed his Delhi visit while interacting with reporters in Kanakapura, saying Rahul Gandhi had called the meeting for Friday evening.
"Rahul Gandhi has called PCC presidents and CLP leaders for a meeting in Delhi this evening. The meeting will go on for around one-and-a-half hours. That is why I am travelling to Delhi," CM Shivakumar said.
Shivakumar clarified that he had no other engagements planned in the national capital and would not be meeting anyone else during the visit in view of the Diwali festival.
The meeting assumes significance as it provides an opportunity for the Congress high command to interact directly with state party presidents and legislative leaders at a time when organisational coordination and political preparedness remain important for the party.
Meanwhile, responding to questions on the November 13 inauguration of Bengaluru Metro's Pink Line by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Shivakumar asserted that the state government had invited the Prime Minister for the event.
"At our invitation, the Prime Minister is coming to Bengaluru on November 13 to inaugurate the Metro Pink Line. Some people are claiming credit by saying that they invited the Prime Minister. What does the BJP have to do with this?" he asked.
Shivakumar said the Metro project had been developed using public money and loans raised by the government. He added that he would raise certain issues concerning the project before the Prime Minister during the inauguration.
On the withdrawal of the sugarcane farmers' agitation, Shivakumar said the government had appealed to the farmers not to make the issue a matter of prestige.
He said representatives of sugar factories and state ministers had held discussions on Friday. Some parties had also approached the court seeking permission to crush sugarcane and police protection for the mills, and an affidavit was being filed in this regard.
Shivakumar said the Centre should take the initiative to fix sugar prices and added that he had written to the Prime Minister seeking intervention.
Union Minister Pralhad Joshi had informed him that efforts were being made in this regard, he said.
Reacting to reports that farmers had threatened to prevent the winter session of the legislature in Belagavi if their demands were not addressed, Shivakumar said such warnings were inappropriate and that farmers should be treated with dignity.
"Calling them in a manner such as 'Hey, come here' is not appropriate. There should be some courtesy. Farmers should not be disrespected," he said.
