Shreyas Iyer's record 42-ball ton makes Ekana his personal stage

Lucknow, Oct 6 (UNI) Shreyas Iyer once again turned the Ekana Cricket Stadium into his personal stage, producing a breathtaking unbeaten 102 off just 43 balls to become the first Indian captain to score a T20I century while chasing, and power India to a crushing eight-wicket victory over West Indies in the opening match of the three-game series here on Tuesday.
Iyer's extraordinary assault, which featured 10 fours and five sixes, saw him reach his century in just 42 balls and rewrite India's record books while stamping his authority on a venue where he has been virtually unstoppable.
The India skipper's 102 not out is the third-highest hundred by an Indian in a successful T20I chase, behind Suryakumar Yadav's 117 against England in Nottingham in 2022 and KL Rahul's unbeaten 110 against West Indies in Lauderhill in 2016.
More significantly, Iyer became the first India captain to register a T20I hundred while batting second, surpassing the previous best of 94 not out by Virat Kohli against West Indies in Hyderabad in 2019.
His 42-ball hundred also put him among the fastest T20I centurions by captains from Full Member nations, matching Harry Brook's 42-ball effort for England against Sri Lanka in Southampton earlier in 2026.
But it was at Ekana where Iyer's latest masterclass acquired an even greater significance.
The 31-year-old has now amassed 335 runs in five T20 innings at the venue without being dismissed, striking at an astonishing 200.59, with 32 fours and 17 sixes.
His remarkable sequence at the ground reads: 57 not out against Sri Lanka in 2022, 23 against Lucknow Super Giants in 2024, 52 not out against LSG in 2025, 101 not out against LSG earlier this year and Tuesday's spectacular 102 not out against West Indies.
In other words, Iyer has been dismissed just once? No — he has not been dismissed at all across those five innings, making his consistency at Ekana as remarkable as his explosiveness.
His latest innings also underlined his evolution as a T20I leader. Rather than merely anchoring the chase, Iyer attacked from the outset, dismantling the West Indies attack with a combination of clean striking and calculated aggression.
The unbeaten 137-run stand with Ishan Kishan added another record to the evening, equalling India's joint-highest third-wicket partnership in T20Is.
But the night ultimately belonged to Iyer — a captain who not only broke a long-standing record but did so in emphatic fashion, continuing an extraordinary personal romance with the Ekana Cricket Stadium.
For Iyer, Lucknow is no longer merely a venue where he performs well. It has become the stage on which he keeps rewriting his own T20 story.
