Sir Ratan Tata Trust tells Charity Commissioner it can’t reply due to regulatory restrictions

Mumbai, Nov 5 (UNI) The Sir Ratan Tata Trust (SRTT) which functions under Tata Trusts Chairman Noel Tata, informed the Maharashtra Charity Commissioner here on Thursday that it is impossible for it to reply to details sought by the regulatory body, due to restrictions imposed on the SRTT by the Charity Commissioner.
The SRTT cited the Maharashtra Charity Commissioner’s order of May 15, which barred the trust from conducting any meetings, adding that its “hands are tied” due to the legal restriction.
The Sir Ratan Tata Trust (SRTT) informed the Maharashtra Charity Commissioner that unless it is allowed to conduct a meeting of its trustees, it is in no position to approve or file its reply to the Charity Commissioner’s notice.
Accordingly, the Sir Ratan Tata Trust (SRTT) has sought an adjournment from the Maharashtra Charity Commissioner.
The Sir Ratan Tata Trust’s (SRTT) adjournment plea came in the midst of a wider challenge by former Sir Dorabji Tata Trust (SDTT) trustee Mehli Mistry before the Maharashtra Charity Commissioner.
Earlier, former Sir Dorabji Tata Trust (SDTT) trustee Mehli Mistry had sought an inquiry into the administration of the three main Tata trusts, namely the Sir Ratan Tata Trust (SRTT), the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust (SDTT) and the Bai Hirabai Jamsetji Tata Navsari Charitable Institution, through an application filed in June 2026.
Former Sir Dorabji Tata Trust (SDTT) trustee Mehli Mistry had sought a scrutiny of commissions and other benefits which trustees receive through their seats on Tata group company boards, along with declarations of interest, related-party matters and alleged departures from SRTT resolutions.
Mistry had flagged an annual commission of about Rs 1.42 crore which Tata Trusts Chairman Noel Tata received from Tata Sons in FY25. The former Sir Dorabji Tata Trust (SDTT) trustee had questioned the engagement of Gerry McGovern for the Venu Srinivasan-run Norton Motorcycles as well as an equity infusion into Tata International.
Mistry also challenged decisions which ended his tenure at the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust (SDTT) and the Bai Hirabai institution.
The former Sir Dorabji Tata Trust (SDTT) trustee Mehli Mistry also alleged that another trustee Venu Srinivasan voted against his reappointment on October 28, 2025, though Srinivasan’s own term as a trustee expired on October 23.
Also, former Sir Dorabji Tata Trust (SDTT) trustee Mehli Mistry questioned Tata Trusts Chairman Noel Tata’s eligibility as a trustee of the Bai Hirabai institution, citing the religious and residency conditions in its 1923 trust deed.
However, Tata Trusts, led by its Chairman Noel Tata, took the position that former trustee Mehli Mistry’s three-year term ended and his reappointment as trustee did not get the required unanimous approval.
Tata Trusts also questioned Mehli Mistry’s locus standi or legal standing to challenge decisions taken by the trusts, after his three-year term as trustee ended.
