Slapping incident: Maha traffic cop's 'maternal' justification fails to click

Latur, June 25 (UNI) A female traffic constable's violent confrontation with three scooter riders in Latur city of Mahrshtra has ignited public scrutiny after viral video showed her assaulting a young woman during a traffic stop. Police authorities have not responded to the incident that occurred on June 23 at Renapur Naka.
Constable Pranita Musne intercepted the trio for triple-seat riding violation. Cellphone footage circulating on social media captures Musne verbally abusing and physically striking one rider after accusing them of reckless driving.
The constable, with 2.5 years in the traffic department, later defended her actions to media: "I'd just dropped my daughters at tuition when I saw them riding dangerously. When I cautioned them, they told me to mind my own business."
Musne acknowledged pursuing the women until a state transport bus forced them to stop. "I acted as a mother, not a police constable, when I slapped her," she stated a day after the incident, offering a qualified apology. "My language was wrong and I apologize to the women and their parents – but my intention wasn't wrong."
Her justification centered on safety concerns, noting one pillion rider "wasn't even sitting properly."
The incident highlights ongoing tensions between traffic enforcement protocols and officer conduct in Maharashtra, particularly regarding disproportionate responses to traffic violations.
Legal experts note that while triple-seat riding violates Section 128 of the Motor Vehicles Act, physical assault by officers constitutes separate criminal liability.
