Sonu Nigam booked for remark on Kannada song

Bengaluru, May 2 (UNI) A formal police complaint was on Friday filed against noted playback singer Sonu Nigam after his controversial remarks at a live concert in Bengaluru appeared to link a fan’s Kannada song request to the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.
The incident occurred during a performance at East Point College in Virgonagar on Thursday evening, when a fan requested Nigam to sing a Kannada song. Perceiving the request as aggressive, Nigam responded on stage stating, "I had started singing Kannada songs even before he was born," and controversially added, "This is why the Pahalgam attack happened — for such kind of an attitude."
The singer's comment, a reference to the April 30 terror strike in Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives, has sparked widespread outrage on social media and among Kannada cultural groups.
Following the backlash, a complaint has been lodged at Avalahalli Police Station under Sections 352(1), 352(2), and 353 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertain to intentional insult with the intent to provoke breach of peace and assault or criminal force to deter public servant from duty. Police officials confirmed to media that a First Information Report (FIR) is likely to be registered within the next 24 hours.
Meanwhile, protests have been called against East Point College by local student and Kannada activist groups for allowing the controversial remarks to be made on its campus.
In his defence, Nigam reiterated his respect for Kannada and the people of Karnataka, stating he has a long-standing association with the Kannada film industry. "Whenever I perform here, I feel like I am with family. Even when abroad, I make sure to sing a Kannada song," Nigam said in a video statement on Friday.
Nigam, who rose to fame with popular tracks in Kannada films such as Mungaru Male, Milana, and 'Gaalipata', maintained that his comments were not directed at the Kannada language or culture, but were a spontaneous reaction to perceived disrespect. UNI BDN SSP
