South Korea vows to pursue resumption of dialogue with North Korea

Seoul, Oct 18 (UNI) South Korea will continue efforts to resume long-stalled dialogue with North Korea and promote peaceful coexistence between the two countries, Prime Minister Han Seong-sook said on Sunday, according to local media.
Seoul would work to lay the groundwork for reopening communication channels with Pyongyang and pursuing talks on peace and shared prosperity, Han was quoted as saying by Yonhap News Agency.
"Efforts will be made to open the door for dialogue between South Korea and North Korea and to hold talks on peace and joint prosperity," Han said.
Acknowledging the division between the two Koreas as a continuing reality, the prime minister highlighted the enduring pain of displaced people and families separated by the decades-long conflict.
"Our efforts to open the road to peaceful coexistence of South Korea and North Korea cannot stop," she said.
The two countries signed the landmark Panmunjom Declaration in April 2018 at the truce village of Panmunjom, pledging to work towards peace on the Korean Peninsula.
However, the neighbours remain technically at war because the 1950-53 Korean War ended with an armistice rather than a peace treaty.
Since taking office in June 2025, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has pursued a more conciliatory approach towards Pyongyang than his predecessor, Yoon Suk Yeol.
His administration halted anti-North Korean loudspeaker broadcasts along the border and banned activists from sending propaganda balloons into North Korean territory, among other measures aimed at easing tensions and restoring communication channels.
