Special status remains close to people’s hearts; struggle for its restoration to continue: Farooq Abdullah

Srinagar, Sep 30 (UNI) National Conference President and veteran politician Farooq Abdullah on Wednesday said special status remains extremely close to the hearts of people of J&K and can never be erased from their minds.
In a statement, Abdullah said that the struggle for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood had become imperative, as the Centre was not demonstrating the sincerity and seriousness required to restore statehood.
He asserted that the National Conference’s demand for the restoration of statehood in no way meant that the party had abandoned its struggle for the constitutional and democratic rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
Abdullah said that the elected government was committed to regularising daily-wagers, streamlining reservation, creating employment opportunities and ensuring accelerated development. However, the union Territory system was creating numerous obstacles in achieving these objectives.
He said that efforts to address the problems and grievances of the common people, employees, traders, unemployed youth, artisans, farmers, orchardists and other sections of society were also facing hurdles at various levels.
The NC President said that many Kashmiri youth had been languishing in jails for years. Several others, arrested during protests following the martyrdom of Ayatollah Khamenei, continued to remain behind bars, adversely affecting their educational and professional careers.
He added that young people were also facing difficulties in obtaining verification for passports, employment and other purposes, forcing them to make repeated visits to various offices.
He said that the resolution of these issues was intrinsically linked to the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, making its immediate restoration an urgent necessity.
Abdullah said that the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference was founded to safeguard the rights, autonomy and democratic values of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, and the party remained steadfast in its commitment to these principles.
He emphasised that the people were the National Conference’s greatest asset and that their interests and welfare must always remain the party’s foremost priority.
He added that despite limited powers and various impediments, the National Conference government was working tirelessly for public welfare, the provision of basic amenities and the resolution of people’s grievances.
