Sugarcane farmers' 'Rasta Roko' agitation enters second day in Maharashtra

Kolhapur, Nov 4 (UNI) The indefinite 'Rasta Roko' agitation launched by sugarcane farmers under the banner of Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana (SSS) entered its second consecutive day on Wednesday, disrupting traffic on the Pune-Bengaluru National Highway at Kini toll plaza in Maharashtra.
Thousands of sugarcane farmers continued their blockade, demanding an initial payment of Rs 4,500 per tonne of sugarcane without any deductions. They have also warned against allowing sugar factories to operate until their pricing demands are met.
Led by SSS activists and its national president, the protesters spent the night on the highway and continued the agitation on Wednesday.
The blockade has been concentrated around the Kini toll plaza and Hattargi toll plaza near the Maharashtra-Karnataka border, bringing vehicular movement on the national highway to a standstill.
Authorities have diverted long-distance vehicles and local commuters to alternative state highways and district roads to ease traffic congestion caused by the protest.
The farmers have vowed to continue the indefinite agitation until their demand for the first instalment of Rs 4,500 per tonne is accepted.
