Sukhu Govt feared defeat, tried to avoid Panchayat Polls: Jairam Thakur

Kangra, Sep 21 (UNI) Former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur has alleged that the Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu government had used the disaster situation as an excuse to delay the Panchayati Raj elections, fearing defeat.
Addressing a felicitation function for newly elected Panchayati Raj representatives of Jaisinghpur Assembly constituency, Thakur said the BJP had approached the High Court and later the Supreme Court to ensure that elections were held, arguing that the basic unit of democracy could not be entrusted to Panchayat Secretaries, Junior Engineers and draftsmen.
He claimed that the Congress had suffered a major setback in the elections and alleged that the state government was now pursuing a policy of political vendetta against BJP workers and representatives.
Thakur also criticised the proposed new Chief Minister's Office, saying successive Chief Ministers had used the existing office to launch welfare schemes and promote development.
He questioned the expenditure of around Rs 50 crore on a new office while the government was citing an economic crisis. He also referred to the power outage during the building's inauguration and described it as an "inauspicious sign".
Targeting Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Thakur said his repeated political failures had led to frustration and alleged that his recent remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his mother reflected poor political thinking.
He claimed that the Gandhi family could eventually face opposition from within the Congress itself.
Congratulating the newly elected representatives, Thakur urged them to strengthen grassroots democracy and work in accordance with the principles of "Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas" and "Sabka Vishwas".
He also called upon BJP workers to prepare for the next Assembly elections.
Former minister and Assembly Speaker Vipin Parmar, former minister Sunil Sharma, former Jaisinghpur MLA Ravindra Dhiman and other BJP leaders and newly elected representatives were present at the function.
