Supreme Court verdict on Hindi education important for national unity: Shanta Kumar

Ashok Raina
Palampur, Sep 19 ( UNI) Former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister and former union Minister Shanta Kumar on Saturday said the Supreme Court not only delivers legal judgments but also offers important guidance on issues concerning national unity.
Reacting to a recent Supreme Court judgment concerning the allotment of land for a Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya in Tamil Nadu, Kumar said that the Bench of Justice B V Nagarathna and Justice A G Masih had directed compliance with the decision to provide land for the school.
He said the court had also observed that it could not be the case that Hindi would not be taught in Tamil Nadu.
Chennai and Delhi should not be viewed as separate from each other, he added, stressing the need for the Centre and states to work together and maintain dialogue on education policy.
Kumar said Justice Nagarathna had observed in the judgment that the people of Chennai should not feel alienated from Delhi, nor should people in Delhi feel alienated from Chennai.
He said the Supreme Court had made it clear that a state could not simply refuse to accept a policy of the union government, adding that while the issue today concerned education, other issues could arise in the future.
Kumar said the Supreme Court had conveyed in clear terms that Tamil Nadu would have to reconsider its approach towards Hindi.
He described the court's observations on the issue involving some southern states as important and thanked and congratulated the Supreme Court for them.
