Table tennis: Yashaswini scripts dramatic comeback as India win both Group F ties

Aichi-Nagoya, Sept 20 (UNI) From a commanding clean sweep to a nerve-wracking fightback, India produced contrasting performances to win both their Group F ties in the women’s team table tennis event at the Asian Games here on Sunday, with Yashaswini Ghorpade emerging as the difference-maker against Singapore.
After brushing aside Indonesia 3-0 in their opening tie, India were pushed to the brink by Singapore before Yashaswini held her nerve in the deciding fifth match to secure a 3-2 victory.
India made a perfect start against Indonesia, with Sreeja Akula defeating Ni Maharani 11-3, 8-11, 11-4, 11-4 to put India 1-0 ahead.
Diya Chitale then beat Almaira Nebuchadnezzar 11-9, 11-8, 11-5 before Yashaswini completed the sweep with a 12-10, 11-4, 11-4 win over Citra Rasmi.
The Singapore tie proved a vastly different challenge. Yashaswini again gave India the lead with a 3-1 victory, but Sreeja lost 3-2 to Ming Loy and Diya went down 3-1 to Zhao Tan as Singapore moved 2-1 ahead.
With India facing the prospect of defeat, Sreeja responded by beating Jian Zeng 3-1 to level the tie at 2-2.
That left the outcome on Yashaswini's racket.
The Indian held her nerve in a see-saw battle against Ming Loy, recovering from a fourth-game setback to win 5-11, 11-8, 12-10, 4-11, 11-9 and seal India's second victory of the day.
Yashaswini thus won both her matches against Singapore, while Sreeja's two victories across the day also proved crucial as India completed a perfect 2-0 start in Group F.
