Tejaswi announces statewide stir against 'EC-BJP nexus'

Patna, Oct 5 (UNI) Leader of Opposition in the Bihar Assembly Tejaswi Prasad Yadav announced a statewide agitation against what he alleged was a "nexus" between the BJP and the Election Commission, accusing the Narendra Modi government and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar of undermining democracy.
Addressing a press conference after a meeting of Mahagathbandhan leaders at his residence here, Yadav said the opposition alliance would hold an "Aakrosh March" at block headquarters across Bihar on October 7, followed by sit-ins at district headquarters on October 8.
On the same day, he said, a "Save Democracy March" would be taken out in Patna from the 7 Murti (Shaheed Smarak) site near the state secretariat to Raj Bhavan under his leadership.
Yadav said the programmes were part of a larger nationwide campaign announced by the opposition alliance against attempts to undermine the electoral process.
According to him, MPs of the opposition alliance would hold a march before the Election Commission in New Delhi on October 6. He also said Mahagathbandhan leaders would seek an appointment with President Droupadi Murmu after October 15 to submit a memorandum on the issues concerning the Election Commission.
Launching a sharp attack on the Election Commission, Yadav alleged that Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar was functioning as a "puppet" of the BJP. He alleged that during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise, names of living voters were included in lists of deceased persons and that irregularities were committed in the deletion of voters' names.
Yadav also alleged that money was transferred into women's bank accounts in violation of the model code of conduct with the intention of benefiting the NDA in the Bihar elections. "Fifty to fifty thousand crore rupees were taken out of the state exchequer to buy votes," he alleged, without furnishing details to substantiate the claim.
The RJD leader further questioned the reduction in the period for retaining election-related records, claiming that records which were earlier preserved for a year were now being retained for only 45 days.
He also alleged that complaints against the Election Commission had been made 14 times over the past 10 months but no action was taken.
Questioning the mechanism for appointing election commissioners, Yadav said the Chief Justice of India was earlier part of the selection panel but had subsequently been replaced by a union minister.
"This allows the BJP to select the Election Commission according to its own preferences," he alleged.
Yadav said Bihar, the "motherland of democracy", would become the centre of the fight to protect democratic institutions.
"When there is no democracy, what is the meaning of elections?" he said, asserting that the opposition would continue its struggle against what he termed electoral irregularities and alleged manipulation of the people''s mandate.
He said the Mahagathbandhan would also expose the "dishonesty" of the Election Commission and the alleged nexus between the BJP, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, union Home Minister Amit Shah and the poll panel.
Yadav reiterated that a meeting with the President was being sought and that opposition leaders would submit a memorandum concerning the functioning of the Election Commission and its alleged proximity to the BJP.
He also said a decision had been taken to organise a rally in Patna as part of the wider nationwide mobilisation planned by the opposition alliance.
Leaders who attended the Mahagathbandhan meeting included Kapil Dev Prasad Yadav of the Congress, VIP chief Mukesh Sahani, CPI secretary Ramnaresh Pandey, CPI(ML) leader Dhirendra Jha, CPI(M) leader Ajay Kumar, IEP's I.P. Gupta and RJD leaders Alok Kumar Mehta and Kumar Sarvjeet, among others.
