Telangana CM Revanth announces series of measures to tackle anticipated drought due to El Nino

Hyderabad, Oct 23 (UNI) Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Friday announced a series of measures to tackle the anticipated drought due to El Nino, stressing the need for advance planning to protect drinking water supplies, agriculture, livestock and electricity availability across Telangana.
Speaking at a meeting at Praja Bhavan, the Chief Minister said drought conditions develop gradually and their impact could intensify over time.
He announced that a daily El Nino bulletin would be issued, with Special Chief Secretary Ramakrishna Rao providing regular updates.
A Cabinet Sub-Committee led by Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka has been constituted to coordinate drought preparedness, while a help desk will be established at Gandhi Bhavan to disseminate information.
Revanth Reddy directed officials to prevent drinking water shortages in Hyderabad, other cities and villages and establish a toll-free helpline to address complaints promptly.
He warned that water levels in reservoirs were extremely low and called for careful use of available resources.
He also stressed the need to protect livestock by ensuring adequate drinking water and fodder.
The Chief Minister said the government would make efforts to provide water for Kharif crops wherever possible, but cautioned farmers against investing in crops without adequate water availability.
He directed officials to promote alternative crops and provide technical guidance based on local conditions.
He assured that employment would be provided to every family even if crops could not be cultivated.
On power supply, Revanth Reddy said electricity demand had reached record levels and the government was purchasing power despite high costs to prevent shortages.
He called for energy conservation in all government offices and cited the installation of rooftop solar systems in every household in his native village, Kondareddypalli, as an example of decentralised power generation.
The Chief Minister also directed ministers, MPs, MLAs and MLCs to visit villages from Sankranti through May to review the situation and ensure that people receive timely assistance. Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao was assigned responsibility for monitoring public representatives’ participation, while Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy would take action against those who failed to comply.
He called for effective use of the Employment Guarantee Scheme to provide work to rural households and undertake the restoration of tanks, ponds and canals, besides constructing roads to agricultural fields.
He also stressed the need for heatwave precautions and measures to prevent loss of life.
Revanth Reddy urged officials to communicate the ground situation honestly and take preventive action rather than conceal the severity of the impending drought.
He said coordinated efforts by all departments would be essential to minimise hardship for farmers and the public, an official statement said.
