Telangana: Cong will continue fight to protect voting rights: Ponnam Prabhakar

Hyderabad, Oct 8 (UNI) Telangana Transport and BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar on Thursday said the Congress would continue its nationwide struggle to protect voters’ rights and oppose what it alleged were irregularities in the electoral rolls.
Addressing a media conference at Panjagutta Police Station along with TPCC president and MLC Mahesh Kumar Goud and other Congress leaders, Prabhakar said the right to vote was the foundation of democracy and that every citizen had a responsibility to safeguard it.
He alleged that eligible voters were being removed from electoral rolls and said the Congress would oppose any attempt to undermine the voting rights of SCs, STs, tribals, minorities and other weaker sections. He said the party was taking its “Save the Vote – Save the Country” campaign to the people and would continue its agitation until voters’ rights were protected.
Prabhakar said the Congress and INDIA bloc were fighting democratically under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi. He condemned the arrest of opposition leaders during peaceful protests and strongly objected to the detention of Rahul Gandhi.
He also stressed the need to preserve the independence of the Election Commission and said it had a responsibility to maintain public confidence in the electoral system.
Mahesh Kumar Goud alleged that the Election Commission, particularly CEC Gyanesh Kumar, was not functioning independently and accused him of acting at the behest of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and union Home Minister Amit Shah. He said the Congress would continue its agitation until Gyanesh Kumar was removed.
Goud further alleged that there was a conspiracy to delete around 13 crore votes to benefit the BJP and claimed that such deletion of voters undermined constitutional values. He also alleged that the RJD-Congress alliance suffered electoral losses due to deletion of votes.
The TPCC chief described the ongoing agitation as part of the Congress's broader struggle to protect the Constitution and democratic rights and appealed to the people of Telangana to participate in the movement to safeguard the right to vote.
