Telangana: Coordinate with revenue officials to identify drought-hit mandals: Tummala

Hyderabad, Oct 1 (UNI) Telangana Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao on Thursday directed officials to identify mandals facing rainfall deficits in coordination with revenue officials and submit the required data for preparing proposals to declare drought-affected mandals.
At a review meeting, the Minister said drought assessment should not be based solely on rainfall deficit and should consider multiple indicators, including rainfall deviation, dry spells, sown area, soil moisture, reservoir and groundwater levels, crop conditions, drinking water and fodder availability, employment and migration.
He directed officials to conduct field-level inspections wherever necessary to verify crop losses.
According to the drought management guidelines cited at the meeting, a rainfall deficit of 20–59 per cent is classified as deficit rainfall, 60–99 per cent as severe deficit and complete absence of rain as an extreme situation.
A cultivated area below 85 per cent of normal is also considered an indicator of drought, while 75 per cent or less indicates severe drought conditions.
On MSP, Tummala urged the Centre to procure 100 per cent of crops for which Minimum Support Prices have been announced, particularly in view of El Niño and climate change.
He said the Centre’s responsibility should not end with announcing MSPs, but should extend to ensuring that every farmer can actually sell produce at the declared price.
He noted that the union Cabinet had recently increased MSPs for the 2027-28 Rabi marketing season by Rs 675 per quintal for safflower, Rs 413 for rapeseed-mustard, Rs 390 for masoor, Rs 136 for barley, Rs 83 for gram and Rs 25 for wheat.
He said farmers would derive the full benefit of MSP only when their produce was procured at the announced rates, according to an official statement.
