Telangana govt misusing welfare schemes for political mileage: BJP's Raghunandan Rao

Hyderabad, June 27 (UNI) Medak MP and senior BJP leader Raghunandan Rao launched a scathing attack on the Congress government in Telangana, accusing it of diverting public attention from its unfulfilled promises by renaming schemes and engaging in publicity stunts.
Speaking at a media conference at the BJP state office today, he criticised the state government for failing to address pressing civic issues while rebranding the Rs 5 meal Annapurna Canteens as “Indiramma Canteens” — a move he termed as a "symbol of political degradation and disregard for historical context".
Raghunandan Rao questioned the logic behind naming welfare schemes after Indira Gandhi, especially while the country was marking 50 years of the Emergency.
He accused the Congress of lacking self-reflection after 18 months in power and said the public was still waiting for the promised benefits, such as scooters for women, unemployment assistance, pensions, and housing. GHMC - Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation - areas continue to suffer from poor water supply, drainage issues, and a rise in stray dog attacks, he added.
He also alleged that the Congress has failed to deliver justice in the Kaleshwaram irrigation project corruption case and the ongoing investigation into illegal phone tapping.
The MP, who claimed to be a victim of surveillance during the 2020 Dubbaka by-election, questioned the sincerity of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) and its lack of action despite multiple complaints made by him to senior officials.
Raghunandan Rao accused the government of politicising the investigation, claiming that unrelated Congress leaders were being summoned while those directly involved were being ignored. He expressed frustration over the delay in arrests and the lack of progress in both the Kaleshwaram and surveillance cases, terming the entire process a farce.

He further slammed the state government for its failure to conduct local body elections despite court directions and urged Chief Minister Revanth Reddy to stop renaming schemes and start fulfilling election promises.
He said people have more faith in local representatives like sarpanches, who are closer to their everyday struggles.
Referring to reports of a threatening call he received during a visit to a private school in Dammaiguda, the MP confirmed that he had lodged a formal complaint and received assurances of security from the district police.
However, he asserted that BJP workers are not afraid of threats and have always stood firm against all forms of extremism and oppression.
He also criticised the BRS for its inconsistent stance on Telangana pride and accused both the BRS and Congress of betraying the Backward Classes. Referring to the BC bill, he said that giving religious-based reservations is unconstitutional and called for a public apology from the former government.
Raghunandan Rao reiterated the BJP's commitment to public service, quoting Prime Minister Modi's statement that the party aims to serve, not rule. He said the people are beginning to see through the Congress’ failures and manipulative politics, and BJP leaders will continue to fight for justice and accountability.
