Telangana Govt to appoint special officers for elderly welfare in every district: Adluri

Hyderabad, Oct 1 (UNI) Telangana Welfare Minister Adluri Laxman Kumar said the State government is giving priority to the dignity, safety, health and financial security of senior citizens and directed officials to take steps to appoint a special officer in every district to address their grievances.
Speaking at a State-level programme held at Ravindra Bharati on Thursday to mark the International Day of Older Persons, the Minister said district-level monitoring should be strengthened to ensure effective implementation of welfare schemes and protection of the rights of the elderly. BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar also attended the event.
Adluri said the government has been working to ensure financial security for elderly persons through effective implementation of laws relating to maintenance and care of parents. He said 30 day-care centres are functioning across the State, providing nutritious food, medical services, games and recreational activities free of cost.
He also highlighted that 2,505 maintenance cases were filed before maintenance tribunals last year, of which 1,346 were resolved. Of 409 appeals before appellate tribunals, 234 were settled. Similarly, 135 of 209 cases seeking restoration of property transferred to children who neglected their parents were resolved.
The Minister said the toll-free Elder Line 14567 provides assistance to senior citizens facing harassment, neglect, loneliness and shelter-related issues. Under Cheyutha pensions, 15.60 lakh eligible elderly persons receive Rs 2,016 per month, while Aarogyasri provides cashless medical treatment of up to Rs 10 lakh for serious health conditions.
The government is also establishing old-age homes in phases across all 33 districts, with 10 currently being managed, and has decided to train 1,700 geriatric caregivers to create a skilled workforce for elderly care.
Senior citizens and representatives of welfare associations submitted requests to the ministers for a dedicated welfare corporation, free bus travel, special identity cards, improved medical facilities and greater financial security. Several individuals who contributed to the welfare of elderly persons were felicitated at the programme.
