Telangana: Padma Vibhushan scientist Palle Rama Rao passes away

Hyderabad, Oct 4 (UNI) Padma Vibhushan Professor Palle Rama Rao, a renowned scientist known for his contributions to metallurgy, materials science and nuclear-related research, passed away at his residence in Srinagar Colony, Hyderabad, on Saturday at midnight.
He was 89.
He is survived by a son and a daughter.
Born on June 30, 1937, in Kurnool, Rama Rao pursued higher education at universities in Bengaluru, Madras, Andhra and Banaras before conducting post-doctoral research in Materials Science at the University of Pennsylvania.
He served as a professor at the Indian Institute of Science and Banaras Hindu University and held several key positions, including Director of the Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory (DMRL), Secretary of the Departments of Science and Technology and Ocean Development, Chairman of the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hyderabad and Chairman of ARCI. He also served as a Distinguished Scientist/Professor with DRDO and ISRO.
Rama Rao played a key role in establishing several institutions, including ARCI and NFTDC in Hyderabad, the National Institute of Ocean Technology in Chennai and the Technology Development Board in Delhi.
The Confederation of Central Government Gazetted Officers' Organizations (CCGGOO), Jana Vignana Vedika and All India People's Science Network (AIPSN) expressed grief over his demise and hailed his contributions to science, education, technology and national service.
CCGGOO National Chairman V Krishna Mohan described Rama Rao as one of India's most distinguished scientists, science policy advisers and academic administrators, whose contributions to the development of indigenous scientific institutions would be remembered.
