Telangana to develop Somasila as wellness and spiritual tourism hub: Minister

Hyderabad, June 26 (UNI) Telangana Minister Jupally Krishna Rao today announced major plans for the development of the tourism in the state, emphasising that the sector offers excellent opportunities for employment generation and economic growth.

Rao, who holds the Tourism, Culture, and Excise portfolios, stated that the government is moving forward with special plans to transform Telangana into a key tourism destination by leveraging its natural, spiritual, and cultural assets.

As part of this vision, the Minister visited several prominent sites including Somasila, Amaragiri, Kalwakurthy Lift Irrigation Project, Narlapur Reservoir, Madhavaswamy Temple in Kollapur, and the historic Jetaprolu Madanagopala Swamy Temple.

Accompanied by Special Chief Secretary of Tourism and Culture Jayesh Ranjan, Tourism Development Corporation MD Kranthi Vallur, District Collector Badavat Santosh, and other officials, Jupally conducted a field-level inspection to assess the tourism development potential of the region.

He revealed that the Government of India has sanctioned Rs 68.10 crore under the ‘Special Assistance to States/Union Territories for Capital Investment (SASC)’ scheme for the Somasila Wellness and Spiritual Retreat Nallamala Project. He directed tourism department officials to take focused steps to develop Somasila, Amaragiri Island, and Eegalapenta, highlighting the region's rich environmental beauty, abundant water resources, temples, and potential for water sports and adventure tourism.

Later, during a review meeting held at the Kollapur camp office, Jupally stressed that many countries have achieved significant economic growth through tourism, and Telangana too must adopt a coordinated approach among departments to achieve similar success. He instructed officials to issue tenders at the earliest and ensure all development works meet the highest quality standards.

The Minister explained that the Somasila project is being planned in two major clusters, with proposals including arrival zones, river cruises, tribal experiences, wellness and spiritual retreats, and recreational amenities.
Facilities like boating jetties at Somashila and Amaragiri Island, eco-cottages, swimming pools, cafeterias, spas, wellness centres, and indoor-outdoor games are also being planned to enhance visitor experience.

Jupally stated that under the leadership of Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, the tourism sector will be developed with international standards to attract both domestic and foreign tourists. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to promoting tourism not only as a source of leisure but also as a means to boost rural development and employment generation across Telangana. UNI VV SSP
