Thackeray cousins reunite, announce joint march against ECI on Oct 4

Mumbai, Sep 29 (UNI) Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) president Raj Thackeray on Tuesday announced that their parties would hold a joint march against the Election Commission of India (ECI) in Mumbai on October 4, amid the ongoing row over Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and differences within the poll panel.
Addressing a joint press conference at Shiv Tirth, Raj Thackeray said the march would begin from Richardson & Cruddas between 11 am and 11.30 am and culminate in a public meeting at a stage near the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation headquarters.
He said Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders Aaditya Thackeray and Sanjay Raut, along with MNS leader Bala Nandgaonkar, would also participate in the march.
Raj Thackeray said the issues to be raised at the march would be elaborated during the October 4 programme. Referring to the debate over electronic voting machines (EVMs), he said he had met several political leaders on the issue in 2017-18 and would speak about it in detail at the rally.
He said political parties and leaders across the political spectrum, including those from the ruling alliance, would be invited to participate in the march. The procession, he added, would not carry the flags of any political party. Instead, participants would carry the national flag, as the issue was linked to what he described as protecting the Constitution.
The announcement comes amid Opposition protests over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and demands for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
.Responding to questions about competition among opposition parties over protests against the Election Commission, Raj Thackeray said the issue should not be viewed as a competition. “The agenda is one, and everyone can pursue it in whatever manner possible,” he said, adding that different groups could organise protests in their own ways.
The joint announcement marks public coming together of the Thackeray cousins on an issue concerning the functioning of the electoral process. Further details of the campaign are expected to be announced after the October 4 march.
