Three men sentenced to 20 years each in Mohali gang rape case, fined Rs 1.8 lakh

Chandigarh, Oct 22 (UNI) A court in Punjab's Mohali district has sentenced three men to 20 years in prison each for gang-raping a young woman after luring her with the promise of a role in a Punjabi singer's music video, nearly four years after the crime took place.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Vikrant Kumar convicted Jaswinder Singh, alias Jelly, Deepak Kumar and Gurwinder Singh, alias Manna, and imposed fines totalling Rs 1.80 lakh on the three convicts.
The court awarded each convict 20 years' imprisonment and a fine of Rs 50,000 under Section 376D of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), dealing with gang rape.
Each of them was also sentenced to seven years in prison and fined Rs 2,000 under Section 394, relating to robbery involving hurt, besides five-year prison terms and fines of Rs 8,000 each under Sections 366 and 120B, concerning abduction and criminal conspiracy.
The convicts will face an additional three months' imprisonment if they fail to pay the fines, according to details of the judgment. Deputy District Attorney Hardeep Singh Rumana represented the prosecution.
The case dates back to October 2, 2022, when the woman, who worked as an artist, received a message offering her an opportunity to participate in the shooting of a Punjabi singer's music video.
According to her complaint to Majri police, she initially agreed to the offer but declined when asked to reach Sector 43 in Chandigarh. The person who contacted her subsequently arrived outside her residence and persuaded her to accompany him.
During the journey, she allegedly overheard the man discussing arrangements to pick up other girls. When she questioned him about their destination, he claimed they were travelling to Abhipur to collect two more women.
Near Abhipur, two motorcycle-borne men intercepted their vehicle, removed the car keys and snatched her mobile phone, according to the complaint.
The woman alleged that one of the men entered the vehicle and sat beside her while another threatened her with a knife.
The three accused subsequently sexually assaulted her after threatening to kill her if she resisted, the prosecution said.
In her complaint, the survivor alleged that the attackers repeatedly covered her mouth and pressed her throat to prevent her from raising an alarm.
The accused fled after the assault.
Following the investigation and trial, the court found all three men guilty of gang rape and other offences, including robbery, abduction and criminal conspiracy.
The prosecution's case centred on allegations that the men had used a fabricated professional opportunity to lure the woman before carrying out the assault.
