Jagat Singh Negi inaugurates HP SHIVA monorail to ease transportation of farm produce

Shimla, Oct 22 (UNI) Himachal Pradesh Horticulture Minister Jagat Singh Negi on Thursday inaugurated Himachal Pradesh’s first HP SHIVA monorail project at the Palhota-2 HP SHIVA Cluster in Mandi district, aimed at facilitating the transportation of fruits and other agricultural produce from hilly terrain.
Constructed at a cost of around Rs. 20 lakh, the one-kilometre-long monorail project is expected to benefit farmers and horticulturists by reducing transportation difficulties, saving time and labour, and improving the movement of agricultural produce from sloping and difficult-to-access areas.
The Palhota-2 cluster covers an area of 28.44 hectares and is associated with 85 farmer families.
Speaking on the occasion, Negi said the state government was making continuous efforts to introduce modern technology in the horticulture sector, strengthen the economic condition of farmers and improve basic infrastructure in rural areas.
He said modern facilities such as the monorail would play an important role in improving agricultural operations and promoting horticultural development in the state.
The Minister said the HP SHIVA project, being implemented with financial assistance from the Asian Development Bank at a cost of Rs. 1,292 crore, covered seven districts of Himachal Pradesh, including Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kangra, Mandi, Solan, Sirmaur and Una.
The project aims to enhance the income of farming families by strengthening horticultural activities and improving the supporting infrastructure.
Negi further said the state government had extended the duration of the HP SHIVA project by two years, from June 2028 to June 2030, keeping the interests of farmers in view.
He said February 27, 2027, had been fixed as the deadline for completing all activities under the first phase of the project across 3,000 hectares and handing over all clusters to farmers.
The initiative is expected to improve the efficiency of farm produce transportation, particularly in areas where steep slopes and difficult terrain pose challenges to conventional transportation methods.
Director of Horticulture Satish Sharma, HP SHIVA Project Director Sameer Singh Rana and other senior officers were present at the inauguration.
