Three Saudi nationals killed in two Houthi attacks on Riyadh’s international airport

Riyadh, Oct 9 (UNI) Three Saudi nationals have been killed in two attacks on Riyadh’s international airport, including a strike on an aircraft operated by state carrier Saudia, Saudi Arabia’s civil aviation authority has said.
The General Authority of Civil Aviation said the attacks on Thursday also injured several Saudi citizens and residents of other nationalities. Saudia confirmed that one of its pilots was among those killed.
According to the body, the air traffic had returned to normal following the attacks.
Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi militia said it had targeted the airport with two missiles, and also claimed to have attacked an airport in Najran, near the Yemeni border, and Khamis Mushait air base further north. However, Riyadh has not confirmed those strikes.
The latest deaths follow Houthi attacks on two Saudi airports on October 6 and 7, which resulted in the deaths of three people and injured 28 others. Two people were killed and 28 wounded at Abha International Airport, while another person died at King Khalid airport.
The attacks come amid marked escalation following the renewed fighting between Yemen’s Saudi-backed government forces and the Houthis, who control much of the country’s north-west.
The Houthi military spokesperson said the earlier attacks on Saudi airports were in response to what the group described as Saudi aggression against Yemen, claiming that 60 air strikes and missile attacks had been carried out against it in the preceding 24 hours.
The group says it is targeting Saudi Arabia because of its support for government forces in Yemen’s civil war.
The conflict has intensified in recent weeks after the Houthis seized strategically important stretches of the Red Sea coast, including the port of Mokha near the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a narrow maritime passage vital to global shipping. Yemeni pro-government forces have since said they had secured the strait at the southern end of the Red Sea.
A Saudi-led coalition intervened in Yemen in 2015 to support the internationally recognised government against the Houthis. A temporary ceasefire was brokered in 2022 after years of air strikes and ground fighting that contributed to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people and a severe humanitarian crisis.
The informal truce began to unravel in July, with the Houthis declaring a “maritime embargo” against Saudi Arabia and launching missile and drone attacks on Saudi airports, oil facilities and tankers in the Red Sea.
The group has described the attacks as retaliation for what it calls a prolonged Saudi blockade and an air strike on Sanaa airport.
