Chennai, May 6 (UNI) Timely action taken by the Idol Wing CID of the Tamil Nadu police
prevented the auction of a priceless antique metal idol in the Netherlands (Europe).
An official release here said the Kannappa Nayanar metal idol was stolen from Arulmigu
Agneeswaraswamy temple at Thirupugalur in Nagapattinam district 15 years ago by
unknown culprits.
After registering a case in Augut 2010, the Idol Wing CID during elaborate investigations
received information that the idol was kept at The European Fine Art Exhibition-2025, held
at Maastricht, the Netherlands for auction.
Immediately, the Idol Wing CID took up with the police officials of the Netherlands and
officers of Archaeological Survey of India to stop the auction.
Due to this timely action, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Netherlands and Dutch, took
custody of Kannappa Nayanar Idol on March 23, 2025.
Legal procedures have been initiated to repatriate the idol from the Netherlands to India.
