TN leading state in Agri, dairy, fisheries sectors : Govt

Chennai, May 18 (UNI) The ruling DMK on Sunday listed out
the achievements of its Dravidian model governance and said
Tamil Nadu emerged as the leading State in Agriculture, dairy
and fisheries sectors.
An official release said thanks to the impetus given to the agri
sector in the form of dedicated budgets for the sector since
the DMK assumed power in May 2021, foodgrain production
jumped to 457.08 lakh metric tonnes and there was increase
in the average Agricultural growth to 5.66.
It also said there was increase of 1,446 metric tonnes in milk
production and the egg production increased by 350 crore.
In the five separate agriculture budgets, a total allocation of
Rs.1,94,076 crore, was and several new schemes were
introduced and implemented to boost agricultural production
and enhance the welfare of the farming community.
Due to the proactive steps of Chief Minister M K Stalin, the
average agricultural growth, which stood at 1.36% between
2012-2013 and 2020-2021, has achieved a record average
of 5.66% from 2021 to 2024.
The area under irrigation, which was 36.07 lakh hectares in
2020-2021, increased to 38.33 lakh hectares in 2023-2024,
resulting in remarkable increase in food production.
Tamil Nadu is ranked first in India in the productivity of finger
millet (Ragi) and guava, holds the second position in the country
in the productivity of maize, sugarcane, tamarind, tapioca, jasmine
and oilseeds.
In respect of productivity of groundnut and coconut, Tamil Nadu
was ranked third in India which highlighted the remarkable
achievements of the Dravidian Model government.
Under the Kalaignar All Village Integrated Agricultural Development
Scheme in 10,187 village panchayats, 47,286 acres of fallow land
have been brought under cultivation at a cost of Rs.786.86 crore and
it has benefitted 51.13 lakh beneficiaries.
A total of 213 regulated markets are integrated with the Electronic
National Agricultural Market (e-NAM) portal, resulting in trading of
22.71 lakh metric tonnes of crop produce worth Rs.6,636 crore,
benefiting 19 lakh farmers.
Under the Agricultural Mechanisation scheme, agricultural machinery
and implements worth Rs.499.45 crore were distributed to 62,820
farmers with subsidy.
To benefit small and marginal farmers and to increase farn production,
814 minor irrigation tanks were renovated at a cost of Rs 75.59 crore.
It said more than 88 check dams have been constructed in 24 districts
at a cost of Rs 519 crore, helping maintain groundwater levels.
It said the Dravidian Model government gave special attention to
increasing milk production through livestock rearing, which serves
as a supplementary occupation for farmers.
As a result, the milk production which was 8,362 metric tonnes in
2018-19 during the previous administration, the DMk government
has raised it to 10,808 metric tonnes in 2023-2024, a record
achievement.
Pointing out that eggs are nutritious and important food and to ensure
that the children of Tamil Nadu get eggs, former TN Chief Minister
M Karunanidhi had ordered that five eggs a week be provided to students
in schools through the nutrition programme.
To ensure sufficient egg availability, Mr Stalin’s government has significantly
boosted egg production by extending support to poultry farms.
As a result, the annual egg production has risen from 1,884.22 crore in
2018–2019 under the previous regime to 2,233.25 crore in 2023–2024,
an impressive increase of nearly 350 crore eggs.
On fishers welfare, it said the government has established 72 new fish
landing centres at a cost of 1,428 crore. Additionally, the Chief Minister
has implemented several schemes to develop fisheries in areas
like Tharangambadi, Rameswaram and Thiruvotriyur Kuppam.
