TN police warns public of false videos of Elon Musk endorsing crypto trading

Chennai, May 1 (UNI) The Cyber Crime Wing of the Tamil Nadu Police on
Thursday issued an alert to the public to a rising trend of cyber frauds involving
fake promotional videos on social media platforms such as Instagram,
portraying Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk of promoting crypto trading.
These videos falsely portray Elon Musk as endorsing cryptocurrency trading
platforms, a CCB release said and advised the public not to fall prey to it.
These scams typically use edited or manipulated clips from real interviews
(including from recent discussions involving Errol Musk, Elon’s father) to
falsely lend credibility to fraudulent investment schemes.
The CCW has identified 26 such Instagram URLs and 14 such fake websites
and sent blocking requests to concerned intermediaries to take down the posts
and block the websites immediately.
"Therefore, public are hereby advised that Elon Musk has NOT endorsed any
platform by giving any offer of free or complimentary Bitcoin for registering on
any crypto trading website and these scams use edited videos generally using
Artificial Intelligence to deceive the public", it said.
"People may lose money or compromise personal data by interacting with these
fraudulent platforms", it cautioned.
On how to identify a scam, the release said "Too-good-to-be-true offers: Guaranteed
returns in crypto investments are a red flag, Fake celebrity endorsements:Do not trust
investment platforms promoted using celebrity photos or videos, Unverified links or
apps: Never download or click on links shared via social media without verification".
The CCB advised the public to verify information through official government and
financial regulatory websites, not to personal or banking information with unknown
platforms and use only authorized crypto exchanges registered with regulatory bodies.
