Tourism Ministry holds cleanliness drive at Safdarjung’s Tomb

New Delhi, Sep 27 (UNI) The Ministry of Tourism on Sunday organised a cleanliness drive at Safdarjung’s Tomb here as part of the ongoing Swachhata Hi Seva 2026 campaign to mark World Tourism Day.
Tourism Secretary Bhuvnesh Kumar led the drive, which was attended by ministry officials and staff, besides students and faculty members from hospitality and tourism institutes.
Kumar said the initiative, being held as part of the Swachhata Pakhwada from September 16 to 30, aimed to raise awareness about the importance of maintaining cleanliness at tourist destinations.
“The objective is not only to carry out cleaning operations but also to raise awareness about the importance of keeping our tourist sites clean and beautiful,” Kumar said.
He said maintaining cleanliness at tourist destinations is essential for providing a better experience to domestic visitors and creating a positive impression among foreign tourists.
The drive also saw participation from tourism institutions and tourist guide federations, the ministry said.
World Tourism Day is observed annually on September 27. The ministry said the tourism sector has emerged as a significant contributor to India’s economy, employment and livelihoods.
According to government data, tourism contributed 5.22 per cent to India’s GDP and supported 8.46 crore jobs in 2023-24. Domestic tourist visits stood at 428.55 crore in 2025, while foreign tourist visits were recorded at 2.53 crore.
Foreign exchange earnings from tourism also rose to Rs 2,76,831 crore in 2025, according to the data cited by the ministry.
The ministry said cleanliness and proper upkeep of tourist destinations remained an important part of efforts to enhance the overall visitor experience.
