Trafficked Kerala woman returns from Malaysia in air ambulance

Kochi, May 23 (UNI) Mini Bhargavan (54), who survived burns while working as a domestic worker after being trafficked to Malaysia, was brought here from Kuala Lumpur in a special air ambulance of Malaysian Airlines.
She was admitted to Kalamasserry Medical College Hospital on Thursday night for further treatment. This is the first time that a Malayali expatriate who is a victim of human trafficking has been brought home using an air ambulance.
Kerala Health Minister Veena George said a medical board has been formed to monitor her treatment and review her health condition.
Earlier, she was admitted to the Penang General Hospital in Malaysia on March 7 after suffering burns at the house where she worked, but her employer did not inform her relatives.
Her health condition deteriorated further as her lung infection and kidney problems worsened during treatment. The family contacted the Loka Kerala Sabha Secretariat and the officials of Indian High Commission after Mini could not be contacted continuously over the phone.
The information was then passed on to the representatives of the Loka Kerala Sabha in Malaysia. The shocking information about Mini, who suffered burns to about 26 per cent of her body and has been unconscious for more than two months without the help of a ventilator, was revealed to the outside world through the preliminary investigation of Loka Kerala Sabha member and social activist Atmeshan Pachat.
There are reports that Mini is among the 42 women, including Mini's sister, who were trafficked to Malaysia on a visit visa as domestic workers under the pretext of granting work visas.
NORKA, a department of the Kerala government to redress the grievances of Non-Resident Keralites (NRKs), with the support of the officials of the Indian High Commission, arranged the air ambulance to bring back the woman.
