Tripura: Counting for Village Committee polls of ADC begins under tight security

Agartala, Oct 5 (UNI) Vote counting for the Village Committee elections under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (ADC) began Monday morning at 45 designated centres across 44 blocks, with around 2,000 personnel deployed for the process.
Secretary of the State Election Commission (SEC) Anurag Sen said security measures had been significantly strengthened, with a multi-layered security arrangement involving central armed paramilitary forces, Tripura Police and Tripura State Rifles personnel deployed at the counting centres, officials said.
"In some areas, due to the higher concentration of Village Committees, counting might extend into the following morning. Conversely, in other locations, counting could conclude by the evening," Sen said.
The elections assume political significance as the two ruling allies, the BJP and TIPRA Motha, contested the Village Committee polls together but are also competing against each other. The two parties had differences over political issues after Motha emerged as a dominant force in the 2026 ADC elections.
Subsequently, the BJP leadership intervened to bring the allies together for the Village Committee polls. However, a uniform seat-sharing arrangement could not be implemented across all committees.
Polling held on September 28 recorded a voter turnout of 81.21 per cent. The polling process was largely peaceful, except for a shooting incident at Gamaria in Udaipur under Gomati district.
Meanwhile, TIPRA Motha leader Pradyot Kishore Debbarman appealed to members of his community to refrain from violence during and after the counting process, warning that clashes within the community would ultimately be detrimental.
He said winning and losing were integral parts of elections and urged all supporters to accept the results peacefully. "In elections, one group wins while another loses—this is universal," Debbarman said, adding that any aggression against those who lost would undermine tribal unity.
The appeal comes against the backdrop of political rivalry and isolated incidents of violence during the election period. On September 28, a TIPRA Motha candidate was shot at Warengbari in Gomati district, triggering heightened tensions. Police later arrested two suspects in connection with the incident, while the alleged main accused is still on the run.
