Wildlife conservation must become people's movement in Manipur: PCCF Anurag Bajpai

Imphal, Oct 5 (UNI) The Forest Department, Government of Manipur on Monday organised a State-wide Photography Exhibition-cum-Competition on resident birds as part of Wildlife Celebration Week 2026, highlighting the State's rich avian diversity and encouraging greater public participation in wildlife conservation.
The initiative seeks to engage students, young people, amateur and professional photographers, birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts in observing, appreciating and documenting Manipur's birdlife. The exhibition also aims to promote awareness of biodiversity, habitats and the need for their protection.
Speaking on the occasion, PCCF and Head of Forest Force Anurag Bajpai said wildlife conservation could not remain confined to forests and protected areas and had to become a people's movement.
He said birds were not merely elements of natural beauty but important indicators of ecosystem health and an integral part of Manipur's natural heritage. The initiative, he added, was aimed at encouraging people, particularly the younger generation, to observe nature closely, appreciate biodiversity and participate actively in conservation.
The Forest Department has promoted the principle of "Photograph, Don't Disturb", urging participants to maintain a safe distance from birds, avoid disturbing nests and breeding sites, and ensure that photography does not interfere with natural behaviour.
Bajpai said the initiative was also intended to encourage citizen-led biodiversity documentation and, in the longer term, strengthen birdwatching, conservation education and responsible nature tourism in the State.
He said photography could serve as a bridge between people and nature, particularly with the widespread availability of digital cameras and mobile phones. The department, he added, hopes to develop the initiative into a broader citizen-based effort for biodiversity documentation, awareness and conservation across Manipur.
The exhibition features selected photographs showcasing the beauty and ecological importance of Manipur's resident birds while providing a platform for emerging photographers and nature enthusiasts.
Bajpai reiterated that the welfare of wildlife must remain the priority, stressing the department's message: "Photograph, Don't Disturb."
