Tripura turns 706 hectares of wasteland into mango orchards

Agartala, June 30 (UNI) About 706 hectares of wasteland in Tripura have been brought under mango cultivation in the state through various government initiatives in seven years under BJP’s rule, claimed Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath today.
Talking to the media, Nath said that for the first Tripura Monsoon Mango Fiesta held at Narikelkunja in Gandacherra under Dhalai District in the last two days, farmers showcased their production of various species of mangoes, including the varieties from the US, Australia, and Singapore.
“The mango farming has transformed the rural economy of Tripura, especially among indigenous communities in the aspirational district of Dhalai. The initiative was taken soon after the BJP came to power in 2018, considering the potential of the region, which yielded the result,” Nath said.
He mentioned that Tripura’s tropical climate, moderate temperature, generous rainfall, and fertile soil make it ideal for mango cultivation. Tripura spans 10,192 hectares, producing 51,368 metric tonnes (MT) annually, averaging 5.04 MT per hectare.
In contrast, Gandacherra boasts a higher average yield of 8 to 9 MT per hectare, nearing the national average of 9.66 MT per hectare.
He said the Horticulture and Research Centre in Nagichara cultivates a wide range of mango varieties, including 13 indigenous improved varieties such as Ambika, Arunika, Amrapalli, and Himsagar, and 22 foreign varieties like Miyazaki, Haribhanga, Yellow Banana, Japanese All Time, and Thai Himsagar.
In the next couple of years, all these varieties of mangoes will be abandoned in the state, and the export will start. Mango orchards have grown significantly over the years in Dhalai district. Currently, 186 farmers manage 22 mango orchards, 4 indigenous and 18 foreign, spread across 277 hectares.
The minister shared that local mangoes were sold wholesale this season at prices ranging from Rs 50 to 70 per kg, while exotic varieties fetched between Rs 150-300 per kg, marking a substantial boost in farmer incomes. The department will impart training to 130 farmers from Gandacherra in advanced fruit cultivation techniques to enhance output and sustainability.
Looking ahead, the state has set an ambitious target to bring 50 hectares of new area under mango cultivation in Gandacherra, expand pineapple cultivation to 10 hectares, and introduce jackfruit farming on 1 hectare.
He revealed that 10 solar-powered cool chambers have been established across Tripura to benefit local fruit farmers.
