Turmeric Cultivation Gains Ground in Kangra as HP Offers Rs 150 per Kg Support Price

Ashok Raina
Dharamshala, Oct 25 (UNI) Turmeric cultivation is emerging as an alternative source of income for farmers in Sunpur village in Baijnath subdivision of Kangra district, with the Himachal Pradesh government fixing a support price of Rs 150 per kg to promote natural farming and crop diversification.
Farmers are increasingly exploring alternative crops to reduce the risks associated with traditional agriculture, particularly damage caused by stray cattle and wild animals. Turmeric, which has steady demand in the food, spice and processing industries, is offering new opportunities to diversify farming and improve farm incomes.
The state government has announced minimum support prices for several crops produced through natural farming, including wheat, maize, barley and turmeric. The support price for turmeric has encouraged farmers to take up its cultivation as an additional source of income.
Praveen Kumari, a farmer from Sunpur village, said she traditionally cultivated paddy and maize but had also taken up turmeric cultivation this year. The crop takes around a year to mature and has good market demand, she said.
She added that the increase in the support price from around Rs 90 per kg to Rs 150 per kg had raised farmers' expectations of better returns and encouraged them to diversify their crops.
Another farmer, Sujata Devi, also sees turmeric cultivation as a promising option, saying the government's support price and promotion of alternative crops have generated fresh hope among farmers for improved earnings.
The initiative highlights the potential of crop diversification and natural farming to reduce dependence on traditional crops while creating additional income opportunities for farmers in the region. UNI AR CDS
