Himachal: Cable theft at 40-45 farmers' tubewells in Kurukshetra: 5 arrested

Kurukshetra, Oct 25 (UNI) Kurukshetra Police today arrested five men allegedly involved in a series of cable and copper wire thefts targeting 40 to 45 agricultural tubewells in the Pehowa area, exposing an organised theft operation that had affected farmers across several villages.
The Crime Investigation Agency (CIA-2) recovered approximately 50 kg of stolen copper wire and tools allegedly used in the thefts, police said.
The arrested suspects were identified as Bali Ram, a resident of Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh; Chirayu of Jaipur, Rajasthan; Sarvesh Kumar of Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh; Deepak of Karnal, Haryana; and Rohit, who lived in a settlement near Sannihit Sarovar in Kurukshetra.
According to CIA-2 Inspector Mandeep Singh, the investigation began after farmers reported that unidentified thieves had stolen cables and wires from agricultural tubewells in Sarsa village on the night of August 7.
Similar complaints subsequently emerged from other villages, and four to five cases were registered before the investigation was transferred to CIA-2.
Acting on specific intelligence, a police team led by PSI Vishal intercepted the five suspects near the Ambala Road drain bridge in the Pehowa area on Sunday and arrested them.
In a separate development during the investigation, the alleged main accused, Bali Ram, sustained a leg injury while reportedly attempting to escape from police custody.
Police said the accused were being taken near Mirzapur canal for recovery and identification proceedings when Bali Ram allegedly tried to flee and jumped into a pit near the canal.
He was subsequently apprehended and admitted to LNJP Hospital in Kurukshetra for treatment.
Investigators said the accused were allegedly involved in stealing cables and copper wires from approximately 40 to 45 tubewells across the Pehowa area.
Police also disclosed that Bali Ram had previously been booked in cases involving robbery, weapons-related offences and theft at Sadar Karnal police station, while Chirayu had a previous theft case registered against him in Jaipur.
The investigation is continuing to establish the suspects' involvement in other incidents and determine the full extent of the stolen property.
The arrests come amid concerns over repeated thefts of agricultural electrical equipment, which can disrupt irrigation operations and impose replacement costs on farmers. UNI KK SS
