Tussle brews in state BJP as party eyes new leadership

Aizawl, June 29 (UNI) The Mizoram unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is in the midst of selecting a new state president and national council representatives, with polling scheduled for Sunday evening between 4 pm and 5 pm, and results expected to be declared Monday morning.
The internal poll process, overseen by state returning officer Delson Notlia, officially kicked off on Saturday with the issuance of the election notification. As per the announced schedule, nominations were accepted from 1 pm to 2 pm on Sunday, followed by scrutiny from 2 pm to 3 pm. A window for candidates to withdraw their names was open between 3 pm and 4 pm, just before the voting hour commenced.
While the procedural steps for a formal election were laid out, insiders within the state BJP revealed that the selection may not reach the ballot stage. National Mahila Morcha president and BJP’s national returning officer Vanathi Srinivasan, who is in charge of the process, is reportedly making efforts to forge a consensus among the contenders.
The contest for the top post has stirred significant interest within the party ranks, with two prominent leaders—former assembly speaker Lalrinliana Sailo and ex-minister of state and current legislator Dr. K. Beichhua—vying for the state president’s chair. Meanwhile, incumbent party chief Vanlalhmuaka has remained conspicuously silent, opting not to actively assert his position in the ongoing leadership race.
According to the state election notification, a total of 21 members from the state council are eligible to vote in this internal election, which also includes selection of representatives to the BJP’s national council.
With the central leadership’s push for consensus, party members are watching closely to see if a contest will actually unfold or if a unified decision will be announced later today.
