TVK’s ‘blame as political narrative’ exposes Vijay govt’s administrative deficit

By MC Rajan
Chennai, Oct 21 (UNI) Blaming the previous DMK government has become a convenient excuse for the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) of Chief Minister Joseph Vijay, turning blame into a political narrative to discredit the principal opposition party and its leadership.
Whether it is the rising crime rate, spiralling prices, frequent power cuts or the recent heavy downpour in Chennai that left many areas waterlogged, TVK ministers were quick to turn the tables on the MK Stalin government. While the TVK maintains that it has inherited a system which needs to be rectified to make it more responsive, the constant blame game appears to expose a governance deficit, raising questions about administrative efficiency.
With Vijay keeping silent and remaining out of the discourse, it is left to the ministers to be on the defensive and respond to opposition criticism, inviting the ridicule that the Chief Minister is not in charge of the government. The DMK and the AIADMK continue to deride him as a doll in the CM’s gaddi, who could not take independent decisions.
Glaring instances of the political executive kept in the dark about certain decisions were the circular to Universities and Colleges on preventing students’ participation in the protests of the Left parties and the Cockroach Janata Party and the enumeration of Left party cadre in a Taluk in Dindigul district and the Madras High Court coming down heavily on the police for denying permission to political rallies and demonstrations. The U-Turn on the new secretariat complex at Foreshore Estate near the Marina sea front following protests from political parties and the fisherfolk is also a case in point.
Unlike the previous Chief Ministers, Vijay takes a back seat rather than engaging public discourse and directing its course by leading from the front. Even in the Assembly, he remains an observer and not a participant. Ironically, he did not reply to the demands for grants for the portfolios held by him during the budget session. All these indicate that there is lack of leadership and coherence in the administration, say observers.
“Jayalalithaa and MGR (AIADMK founder MG Ramachandran), who came from the tinsel world, have proved that they were in command as Chief Ministers. They fought from the front which shored up their image as strong leaders. In the case of Vijay--also from the tinsel world--occasionally lambasting the DMK, cannot be a substitute for administrative efficiency. It is time he comes out of his comfort zone,” vsays political analysts K.Elangovan, adding that the TVK cannot remain content with blaming others for its own shortcomings.
