Two held for supplying SIM cards used to dupe Gurugram man of Rs1.64 lakh

Gurugram, Oct 20 (UNI) Police have arrested two men from Bihar's Banka district for allegedly supplying SIM cards used by cyber fraudsters who cheated a Gurugram resident of ₹1.64 lakh through a fake gas bill payment link, officials said on Tuesday.
The complainant told police that he received a WhatsApp message on October 9 claiming that his HCG gas bill was pending and his connection would be disconnected if payment was not made on time. He was asked to contact other mobile numbers and subsequently received an APK file named “HCG BILL UPDATE.apk”.
After clicking the file, a payment portal resembling Razorpay opened and prompted him to pay ₹12. Although he made the payment using his credit card, suspicious transactions were subsequently carried out from his bank account, resulting in a loss of ₹1,64,900, police said.
A case was registered at the Cyber Crime East police station on October 12.
A police team led by Inspector Amit Sharma arrested the accused on October 16. They were identified as Nirmal Kumar alias Vijay Kumar and Gopi Kumar Yadav, both residents of Banka district in Bihar.
The accused were produced before a court in Banka, which granted transit remand. They were subsequently brought to Gurugram and produced before a court on October 18, following which they were taken into one-day police custody.
During interrogation, police found that the accused had allegedly supplied SIM cards used in the fraud. Nirmal allegedly obtained the SIM cards fraudulently in another person's name and handed them to Gopi for ₹1,000. Gopi then allegedly sold them to another person for ₹1,500, police said.
Investigators said the accused had previously supplied SIM cards that were used in similar cyber frauds.
Police have recovered two mobile phones and two SIM cards allegedly used in the crime. Further investigation is underway.UNI KK AAB
